Today Ministry of Health of Georgia and Global Fund signed an agreement, according to which the Georgian government commits to cover over 90% of HIV treatment costs, which will be delivered according to the international treatment standards.
Global Alliance president Dr. Jean-Elie Malkin, who consults Ministry of Health in improving Georgia’s health care system, also commented on the importance of the framework agreement.
“Universal Health Care Program in terms of HIV and tuberculosis are very important issues. The country should step by step move to national funding for treatment and prevention programs. Global Fund is leaving the region, the main challenge for Georgia is to switch from having international donors to self-financing the domestic HIV and TB programs.”
Global Alliance supports Georgian government in raising funds for implementing these programs.
“For us it is very important to advise Georgian government on finding alternative ways to fund its HIV and TB elimination programs,” Jean-Elie Malkin said.
